Grateful Dead General Thread

I apologize for ever saying the early 80's Grateful Dead wasn't very good.  I've been on a 80's kick for a few months now and this show is just outstanding.  This may be the best China>Rider I've heard.  Jerry and Brent are just going off.

I love the artwork.  And this show has great sound and an interesting set list.  I'm looking forward to the Throwin'Stones>The Wheel>Truckin'>Wharf Rat>Around and Around>One more Saturday Night finish!

I was today's year old that I learned a lot of Dead & Co. shows are on Amazon Video.  I'm currently listening to 12/2/17...the show at the Frank Erwin Center.  I went to the show with Wolfgang (YGIFS).  That was a fantastic night and it rekindled my love of the Grateful Dead.  That night changed my life again and I'm so glad that Wolfgang and I went to that show!

Tonight is a rare 75 show. This has a damn fine “It must have been the Roses”. It almost feels like they are transitioning from the jazzy early 70’s to the funky late 70’s during this show.

Let Phil Sing!

Rip Maestro, amazing musician and the best player ever in the best band ever. Really more than best player, just an amazing musician in every since of the word.

RIP Lobo as well.

I rarely smoke weed, just a tiny edible before bed, but I shared a fat joint with the other Deadheads down at the neighborhood dock tonight in both thier honor.

I was in New Orleans this last week.  I knew at the end of the week was Wolfgang's memorial.  One night I took a double bourbon back to my room.  The hotel I stay at has a great view over the Mississippi and the east side of New Orleans.  There is always something to watch going on in town.  I was thinking of Ygifs so I listened to one of his favorite songs.

I met Wolfgang's mother today and told her that he and I shared a love of the Grateful Dead and we had gone to Dead and Company on 12/2/17 at the Frank Erwin Center.  She shook her head and said, "I always thought that was a phase".  We laughed, but I assured her that it was not a phase at all.

Warren Haynes posted to Facebook:

RIP Phil Lesh - A huge loss to the music world and to our beloved musical community. There’s a whole type of music fan and a whole type of musician that exists due to something that Phil helped create. I always thought of myself as that type of fan and that type of musician but I can say I was brought into that world full force by a simple phone call I received from Phil in the late 90’s inviting me to join him for what at that time was just gonna be a few shows and turned into decades of playing music together.

Prior to that I had always considered myself an open-minded musician but instantly upon meeting and playing with Phil I realized that his open-mindedness in that regard went way beyond mine or nearly anyone else’s for that matter. I was amazed at the lack of pressure he put on "the music” which he always maintained “existed” and we just "tapped into it". There was no fear of venturing too far, of exploring the unknown, of trying something that might totally backfire — whether it be in rehearsal or in front of a massive audience. “There are no mistakes — only missed opportunities” he was known to say and he always turned what most musicians would consider mistakes into a chance to venture down a new path which oftentimes would lead to musical highlights of the performance.

I learned an untold amount from Phil and we shared an amazing amount of musical joy on stage in the countless times we played together. It was through him that I was introduced to a lot of what would become my favorite musical collaborators. Thanks to Phil I had the wonderful experience of performing as part of many incarnations of "Phil Lesh and Friends” — most notably “The Quintet” which played together for several years and is still one of the greatest ensembles I’ve ever been part of. Also thanks to Phil, I had the amazing honor of touring with The Dead in 2004 and 2009 which was an unforgettable experience and I cherish the musical and personal relationships forged with Bob, Mickey, and Billy as a result.

Phil has been a bit of a “north star” to so many fans and musicians alike and the impact of his loss will be a heavy one. I remember when my soulmate Allen Woody died — Phil was one of the first people to call me and I’ll never forget what he said: “I’m so sorry. I know what it’s like to lose someone with which you have a profound musical relationship.” Yes he did. And now I’ve lost another one. Thank you Phil.

Business kept me out of the info loop, and Phil’s passing is quite a shock.

I remember a conversation, back in ‘85, with the grandparent of a deadhead, who was all  in on Phil’s classical background. Connecting with that generation about the Dead was affirming in a novel way, and helped me understand the acceptance  shown the Dead by NPR types is the years after.

Godspeed, Mr Lesh. I am so grateful.

Well, OK, I guess it all depends on your worldview; you can see your place in the world as something to defend from those who might want to take some or all of it from you—or you can see it as a grand adventure, a place to make dreams come to fruition for yourself and for others.

There is, of course, an in-between place—but the more you lean toward the grand adventure side, the clearer the choice becomes. More good comes from focusing on building a world where disparities aren’t so pronounced that they cause friction and reducing the inequalities that create barriers.

With these things in mind, I’ve done my research and come to the clear conclusion that I’ll be voting for @KamalaHarris and @TimWalz this time around.

Mickey spoke out too.

Fire on the Mountain!

In dictatorships there are no rules of fair play, no freedoms of any kind. This rhythm is not the rhythm of a people but of one person. Liberty and freedom are rare in this world. America is our country where freedom is in jeopardy. Don’t take it for granted…it is worth fighting for. We need leaders like Kamala Harris to raise us up and to save our freedoms and liberty, the singular and most important value of America. Kamala has a vision, that vision is based on individual rights, to pray in peace, to have control over your own health, to protect our land and oceans.. everything.

Most of the world is now in chaos because they do not believe in the rules, the rhythms in life that work, and the others that do not. You have only one vote to make your mark. This is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make.. The alternative is really not an alternative after all…this is no joke folks. Your fate, your world is on the line. @kamalaharris is the only choice VOTE!!!

Billy did too but not as explicitly.

It’s been a long rough week. I’ve been looking forward to getting home and having a little down time. This has been a hell of a year coming on the heels of a hell of a year last year. So many ups and downs that nights like this mean a lot. It’s spectacular outside. I just may listen to this on repeat for the rest of the night and pass out outside.
