Hate. What is your favorite version of Row Jimmy Row?

It might be the 7/4/89 Buffalo version, but I could be persuaded.

That's a tough call since there have been so many great versions over the years. But the one at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh on 7/8/90 was pretty sweet when a colorful hot air balloon floated overhead during the song. That was almost as cool as the big orange full moon hanging above the pavilion at Alpine Valley during Standing on the Moon on 7/17/89.

As I've said before, heady version is such a great resource for finding the best versions of the songs you like.  Here is a link for the best Row Jimmy:

http://headyversion.com/song/225/grateful-dead/row-jimmy/

I don't always agree with the consensus, but I've found so many great versions of songs this way. It's also led me to listen to many great shows.  I also like the dialogue about the songs and why that version is someone's favorite.  Also as I've mentioned before, there is a heavy lean to the early 70's era on the site.

I’m sitting on the porch jamming to Shakedown Street for the millionth time and I’ve come to a new realization. I love everything about this song, but I think my favorite part is to listen to Phil. Clearly he’s fantastic on everything he plays, but goddamn he absolutely makes this song a million times better....and that’s really saying something because it’s a great fucking song!

I took a surly break for a while but am back.  Enjoyed going through and catching up.

I lean towards 72-74 so some really good early versions of Row Jimmy are 2/24/74 and 11/17/73 (any song from either of these shows is a really good version).  7/31/74 is good too (all three were Dave’s Picks).

Hate, which Shakedown were you listening to?  I love the one from the So Many Roads set (NYE ‘83) and the one from the Fall ‘79 road trips.  Also 9/10/91 with Branford.  Phil has a really cool tone and takes control near the end.

The 12/31/84 Shakedown you mentioned is truly fantastic. Im currently listening to the rest of the show as well. A pretty great Peggy O followed by an outstanding Jack Straw. The set list looks like I’m in for a good evening.

I’ve actually never checked that whole show out.  Will have to.  I mostly collect official releases so I am pretty light on the  mid 80’s.  The Music Never Stopped (Fall ‘80?) that follows the shakedown in that box set is phenomenal too.  Both peaks in the jam are outrageous.  It is ranked surprisingly low on heady versions - for my ears, none of the ones near the top can touch it.

Weird. I was just listening to some Dead right now. I poured my first of what is to surely be many drinks tonight. I’m on an Althea kick tonight. I’m currently listening to the 3/14/81 version which is the highest rated on headyversion. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a better crowd recording.

A song that I’ve seen come up on various Grateful Dead threads over the last few days is Days Between. I think a lot of Heads call the days between Jerry’s birthday and the day he died the Days Between? Anyway, I was lucky enough to hear what I consider the best version of it. It’s just fucking terrific. The whole show is pretty good for a 93 show. It has a great set list and other than Bobby screwing up Cassidy, it’s a pretty flawless show.

The wife and I along with another couple are going to see JRAD at the House of Blues in Houston 9/13. This will be the first tribute band I've seen.  It should be pretty fun.  Anyone else in the Houston area going?

Have tix for this as well.

I'll be there as well as will Tylerocks. (see the post before yours).  We had to upgrade to the VIP table (no humblebrag) because one of the people going with us is a big guy and wants his space.  We tried to get aisle seats in the balcony but there weren't any tickets available.  He isn't a big Deadhead anyway, so he was more than willing to shell out to have a waitress that can bring him drinks all night.  His fiance is a big Deadhead.  I'll probably be down in the SRO area dancing most of the night anyway.  I can't wait.  It should be a lot of fun.

That's a great show period!! The Deal is absolutely smoking, it may be the best Cold Rain and Snow, and the Morning Dew is fucking stellar.  I watch that show often.  Right now I have my Dead setlist on random to help drown my sorrows. I'm currently on the  Eyes of the World from Nassau with Branford Marsalis.  Next up is They Love Each Other from 5/8/77.  Goddamn there isn't a better band in the history of music!!

I meant to post yesterday on the anniversary of 9/10/91 at MSG.  I think it is the only full show with Branford and Bruce.  Back in my tape trading days, the first set tape, which included the Help>slip>frank from the second set, was one my two most listened-to tapes (the other was the first tape from 9/21/72).  The SBD was mixed perfectly and each guy’s playing is so tight it sounds like a studio recording.  The CC Rider> It Takes a lot to Laugh is one of my favorite things they ever did.  They nail every song in the first set and he second set is really good too.

Great show. I’m beginning to explore the post Brent era and 9/16/90 at MSG is really, really growing on me. Dick’s Picks Volume 9

I'll submit my first show for your enjoyment then.  It's June 13, 1993 from Buffalo.  The highlights to me were the Loser, Tennessee Jed, Deal, Looks Like Rain (Bobby played acoustic for the first time ever on this), and the best ever Days Between imo.

Can’t wait. Come up and say hi. I mentioned to someone that I had to get VIP seats tonight. We are here with a lady my wife works with and her fiancée. He’s a big guy that didn’t want to sit on the small seats, so we had to upgrade to the VIP. I’ll be sitting on some platform closer to the stage. I’m wearing a green Steal Your Face that says “Top of the Morning Dew”. Come by and introduce yourself.

I came away from the show pretty impressed.  I was kind of expecting a "Skeletons From the Closet" setlist, but they were pretty varied in what they played.  Here is the setlist:

Man Smart, Women Smarter

Eyes of the World,

Mr Charlie

The Wheel

Uncle John's Band

The Music Never Stopped

Brown Eyed Women

He's Gone

Estimated Prophet

The Other One

Deal

Morning Dew

Samson and Delilah

All of the songs were played very well.  Some of their jams started to sound a little similar,  but the show was a blast.  The Mr. Charlie, He's Gone, and Deal really stood out for me.  I will absolutely be going again when/if they come back to Houston.

RIP Robert Hunter. He passed away last night at the age of 78.

He was one of the greatest lyricists of all time. Dylan's got nothing on him.

Thanks for letting your inspiration flow, Robert, and fare you well. I love you more than words can tell.

Noooooooooo.

Damn.   What a loss.

Fare you well my honey
Fare you well my only true one
All the birds that were singing
Have flown except you alone

Goin to leave this Broke-down Palace
On my hands and my knees I will roll roll roll
Make myself a bed by the waterside
In my time - in my time - I will roll roll roll

In a bed, in a bed
by the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul

River gonna take me
Sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy
all the way back back home
It's a far gone lullaby
sung many years ago
Mama, Mama, many worlds I've come
since I first left home

Goin home, goin home
by the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul

Goin to plant a weeping willow
On the banks green edge it will grow grow grow
Sing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go - the river roll roll roll

Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul

My favorite version of this song.

Tragic lyrics

Cerise was brushing her long hair gently down
It was the afternoon of carnival
as she brushes it gently down

Reuben was strumming the painted mandolin
It was inlaid with a pretty face in jade
Played the Carnival Parade

Cerise was dressing as Pirouette in white
when a fatal vision gripped her tight
Cerise beware tonight

Reuben, Reuben tell me truly true
I feel afraid and I don't know why I do
Is there another girl for you?

If you could see in my heart
you would know it's true
there is none Cerise except for you
except for you
I swear to it on my very soul
If I lie may I fall down cold

When Reuben played the painted mandolin
the breeze would stop to listen in
before going its way again

Masquerade began when nightfall finally woke
Like waves against the bandstand dancers broke
to the painted mandolin

Looking out on the crowd, who is standing there?
Sweet Ruby Claire at Reuben stared
At Reuben stared
She was dressed as Pirouette in red
and her hair hung gently down

The crowd pressed round
Ruby stood as though alone
Reuben's song took on a different tone
and he played it just for her

The song he played was the Carnival Parade
Each note cut a thread of Cerise's fate
It cut through like a blade

Reuben was playing the painted mandolin
When Ruby froze and turned to stone
for the strings played all alone

The voice of Cerise from the face of the mandolin
singing: Reuben, Reuben tell me true
for I have no one but you
If you could see in my heart
you would know it's true
There is none Cerise, except for you -except for you

I swear to it on my very soul
If I lie, may I fall down cold

The truth of love
an unsung song must tell
The course of love must follow blind
without a look behind
Rubin walked through the streets
of New Orleans 'till dawn,
Cerise so lightly in his arms
and her hair hung gently down

So true. I have Box of Rain: Lyrics 65-93, and I thumb through it all the time and find amazing things.

When the last rose of summer pricks my finger,
And the hot sun chills me to the bone,
When I can't hear the song for the singer,
And I can't tell my pillow from a stone,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.

When the last bolt of sunshine hits the mountain,
And the stars start to splatter in the sky,
When the moon hits the southwest horizon,
With the scream of an eagle on the fly,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And listen to the ripples as they moan,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.

Black muddy river, roll on forever,
I don't care how deep or wide, if you've got another side,
Roll muddy river, roll muddy river, black muddy river, roll.

When it seems like the night will last forever,
And there's nothing left to do but count the years,
When the strings of my heart begin to sever,
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears,
I will walk alone, by the black muddy river,
And dream me a dream of my own,
I will walk alone, by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own, sing me a song of my own.
