So what made the black nuclear family implode? Seems weird that all of a sudden racism got rid of the family.

This is race independent as far as I know.  I'm certainly not a sociological expert but I did stay at several Holiday Inn Express type hotels with IHG rewards being awesome since they never expire unlike the shitty HHonors program and the Comfort Inn programs that expire rather quickly without use.

I'd also like to say that my formal training isn't in sociology either and I haven't stayed at an IHG property since 5/25 so it's starting to wear off some. I would say that welfare was the direct cause if it occurred in a vacuum, but of course it didn't. This was the era of Vietnam, Civil Rights, The Sexual Revolution, and a ton of other cultural changes in the United States. Perusing the academia on this you have a lot of blame placed on the ability of women to earn independently as women in the workplace became more common.

How can anyone not care about bacon? It's bacon! I am not a fan of pork but I do love  bacon. Well, I also like ribs, pork chops, pork belly, pulled pork, pork sausage, carnitas, cracklings and tamales but not really a pork fan.

It's like being around rabid soccer fans. I get that you are into it. I am jealous that I do not feel the same.

I get this. I love soccer but soccer fans can be the most obnoxious fans in the world. They remind me of people who think they've "discovered" this really cool band that you don't know about but you should. And they are going to be smug as hell about it.

I could listen to a really cool band at a soccer game while eating bacon, and have a good time. Not gonna say my heart would be racing though.

How many Put Reagan on the Rock petitions did you sign back in the day?

Not sure where you got the idea Fozzz is a Republican.

My unpopular opinion: people should actually read the posts they respond to, in full, in context with the whole conversation. This board is littered with knee-jerk reactions like that.

Abortion takes a human life and it is wrong.

I get the moral qualms many have with abortion, but to phrase it like it is above (with no exceptions for the life of  the mother, or even exceptions for rape/murder) is to make some sort of value judgement on others, specifically saying that the life of the mother isn't worth as much as the life of the unborn fetus.

This is/was the old school Catholic view: a mom has 9 kids, is in a very difficult pregnancy with the option of abortion (to save the mother) or not (to save the fetus). The mom has been baptized, hence been saved, therefore she's going to heaven but the unbaptized fetus hasn't. So, save the fetus. In the meantime, you've got 10 kids now without a mother. That makes no sense to me, right up there with having no exceptions to the blanket "abortion is wrong" mentality.

That's my somewhat unpopular opinion, amongst some at least.

The increase of deaths on Mt. Everest because of the absurd queue is a clue to increasing wealth inequality.

Actually, prices have been dropping as more "cheaper" expedition companies have come to rise.  Choosing between $100k for a properly managed one that requires you to be a professional climber...to $8-10k that doesn't require you to have any prior experience, well, you get what you pay for.  Have fun dying in a foreign country where your family / loved ones will have no recompense.

Fuck all these people with handicapped parking, most of them aren't necessary.

And fixing Public Education is the only chance this country has.

Handicapped parking bothers me a little less than what those fuckers have done to our public bathrooms. Those wheelchair accessible urinals suck.

Now, with my 18-inch dong, I suffer from this less than most of you tater-tot dicks out there, but I still splash piss all over my ankles because of the longer drop from peehole to urinal cake these pissers offer up.

(Actually, it's NBD unless it's the only option in men's room, which I am seeing increasingly often as business owners cut corners to comply with the ADA.)

The Catholic Church really needs to revisit it's concept of Original Sin.

Now hear out why...if you're having a day full of stress you could absolutely light him up for a myriad of reasons on any given post and he would bounce right back.  In real life and even online I try to, at least, take it kind of easy and not go full asshole.  But if I needed that outlet, that punching bag was always waiting right here, relaxing in his slightly used Corvette, posting pics of his mail order 4 from Norway.

I think we're already fucked on that front - there's been several nonpolitical posts.  But ^^^^ Rocco was using being shit on in CR as he was especially stupid in here.  Like a real life Clayton Bigsby, with a huge hard on for Trump.

Agree. But it's more than the RCC. It's basically all Christianity.

But without the dogma of "original sin" then why would you need a savior? You wouldn't.

So another of my unpopular opinions is that this is all just a business monopoly plan by the church to sucker people into accepting their product. Jesus? Good guy. Nothing divine about him.

As a liberal, I think it's too easy for people to be poor.  You can be poor in America and have a base level middle class lifestyle.  (House, car, cable, cell phone, etc.)  There should be less of a safety net, which would force people out of complacency.

The only reason the rich are okay with providing the poor with some base level of comfort, vs. hoarding it all themselves, is that keeping then sated with phones and big screens and junk food keeps them from rioting and disrupting the oligarchy.

Plus, it's cheap to do, and gives them one of their better wedge issues ("omg welfare queens!") to keep poor white idiots voting against their own self-interest.

Exactly this.  Conservatives that rail against food stamps don’t understand what their real purpose is.  As long as the masses have cheap food and entertainment, everything is fine.

democracy is overrated.  i used to like william buckley's quote about "rather being governed by the first 1000 names in the phone book" and now think the exact opposite. only the super capable seem to have the ability to fight their biases, follow reason, reach conclusions based on evidence, etc.  i haven't figured out how to get those people in charge while excluding those that would use their abilities wrongly though.

it's fundamental to my profession that argument in front of 12 people -- a stand in for a cross section of society -- is largely about putting on an emotional dog and pony show because that is what they'll respond to.  and you'd have been better off having settled long before you get there because god knows what they are going to do.  quite an indictment.

No sane person would ever want to participate in politics. Which is why we are where we are as a country. The insane run the USA.

Like it or not trump has destroyed both parties and that is a good thing. Top republicans lost elections and resigned. Top dems are losing elections and influence in their party. If you like term limits then trump v. Clinton gave us a pared down version. When guys like chaffetz, Ryan, and others willfully leave government abd stalwarts are voted out it is a good thing. The trump phenomenon and the equal and opposite reaction from the dems is great for our government. It will be even better if both parties realize that neither is ever going to have enough power to completely change the path of the country and they start to come together to give and take for the greater interest.

I have no delusion that give and take will happen but I am content that the traditional power brokers are losing their grip. This is a good thing regardless of what you think of trump.

Yeah, I mean these guys rode the wave of Trump to new senate seats in 2018. Definitely changing the paradigm here boys!

In 2019 the average tenure of a senator is 10.1 years. That’s after 8 senators left office. They averaged 13.75 years of tenure.

The greater problem though isn’t how much time you spend in the senate or house for the most part. It is the tenure in politics in general. This isn’t a career path but has been made to be that by people who want power. Those same 8 senators who are no longer in office have an average political career of 31.375 years. Claire Mccaskill for example has a 36 year career. She has presided over my life one way or another for the entire 34.5 years of it. That’s ludicrous.

Further, on average, prior to 1860 40% of representatives would NOT seek re-election. Today that number is below 11.5%.

So are they in DC for us or for themselves?

How dare you sir, for engaging in ageism!  Someday you will be 103 years old, and you may want to make a porno with another 103 year-old, and I will defend your right to do so.

We should all be paying a lot more taxes. Like, a lot. Mostly on the local level. Higher percentages on a much more progressive income tax scale, increases and expansion of local and some sales taxes, a very high estate tax percentage over $2 million or so, new value added taxes, financial transaction taxes, gas taxes, mileage taxes, carbon taxes, etc. We don't pay nearly what it takes to live in a well run civil society.

On the local level especially, I have no idea how we've convinced governments to continue widening and building more roads while constantly lowering taxes. The cost of maintaining all of that infrastructure is enormous and nowhere near feasible at current levels. I really wish people understood the long term costs of these things and how all future generations are completely fucked by the past generations exorbetence and inability to simply pay what is needed to maintain all of this.

Public school teachers should be paid up to six figures. Cops should also be six figure employees. They should have a bachelors degree minimum, post-grad preferred, subject of course to wholesale reform on use of force. And there should be a lot more cops doing mostly community policing, mixing it up with the people, not just protecting, but serving. They should be visible by everyone on a regular basis mostly doing civic relations.

And government employees at all levels should be better paid, at least competitive with private jobs of similar skill levels, and ideally a little more. Government is the one industry that affects literally every single citizen. It's a dumb self-fulfilling prophecy to complain that government sucks and cutting budgets for that reason. If you paid competitive or better wages and hired better people, maybe they wouldn't fucking suck so bad. Cutting budgets just ensures it'll get worse. Government workers do some of the most important work in our society, maintaining infrustructure, collecting taxes, DHS helping children with basic needs, courts to ensure safety and private rights, etc., etc. And government buildings used to be equal to churches in grandeur. Now they are the cheapest possible matchstick boxes possible and never get repaired when they start leaking and looking like shit. There is a middle ground that we should be targeting for government buildings.

With all of that, I fully support efficiency initiatives. I think the federal government has become too bloated and inefficient, but again, just cutting taxes and budgets is the dumbest way possible to address it. Be proactive on becoming more efficient. All the GOP wants to do is "shrink government" which to them just means cutting taxes and doing no followup whatsoever. It's a disingenuous money grab for their wealthy constituents.
