I lived in North Carolina at the time and was a senior in high school.  I remember hearing about that on the national news, and being awfully disturbed at the brutality and the fact that the victims were around my age.

Pops was in the law library being a scared little undergrad who came from a town with a graduating class of a dozen kids, didn't know anyone, and just studied to keep afloat

When it started, my roommate & I were having burgers at the Holiday House on The Drag.
Wondering what all the sirens were zooming by, we walked back through the covered passageway to the parking lot where some other “spectators” hollered at us to take cover.

That’s when we heard loud gunfire from the Tower, and looked up to clearly see him leaning over the parapet shooting down.
We only stayed there for a few minutes, then when Whitman moved around out of sight we drove out of the lot over to the Plantation House restaurant lot on 19th for a “safer” view.
Then we drove over to our West Campus apartment to watch it on live TV.
When we saw the white flag waving (by the cops on the observation deck) we ran from the apartment eastward on 24th to the Drag, down to the Co-op, then up the West Mall to the Tower, where hundreds of people had gathered & were milling around.
I saw an older guy, obviously a Texas Ranger in a suit - with Stetson and a badge on his belt - walking around with a Thompson. Also saw a Daily Texan student “reporter” with a notepad in hand and somewhat comically with an old Army helmet on his head.

Like how you can’t find a decent fast-food yogurt in Austin anymore?

The TCBY on MLK by campus is still there.  It has been there for what, 40 years?  Number of people I know who have actually gone there for yogurt: 0.0  It HAS to be a front for something.

I've eaten yogurt there, once, 35 years ago (roughly).

I didn't murder anybody there, I promise.

No fucking way. I have a mental picture of how that general area was in the late 90s and early 00s. Mr. Gattis and Taco Cabana and all that. Pizza Hut even. I thought for sure it would be either totally boarded up and full of strung out squatters or replaced with a P Terry's

You know me. I ate yogurt there in 1993.

So, how long have you been an owner of the TCBY on MLK?

For my frozen dessert needs back in those days -- which were usually related to a date or somesuch -- I took a lady to Amy's or even Baskin Robbins on the drag.  A shake from Mad Dogs or Players was also in the mix.  I lived a couple of blocks away from TCBY for 4 years, and I truly can't recall ever going there.  And when I drive by it now....I have NEVER seen a car there or person inside getting yogurt.

Makes me wish I was an owner, because whatever the scam is....it must be lucrative as hell.

So, this claim checks out.

I miss the Wendy's, but probably for the best.

That’s some valuable dirt. Out of curiosity, I looked it up on TCAD. 6,000sf lot on the tax rolls at a $2.6 million valuation.

I didn't bother to look up the value but it did cross my mind to check.

A side note, and back to Brisket's point, Street View allows you to go back in time by clicking the Month/Year thingy to see how it's changed over time. They offer up several shots of that empty parking lot, with it only occasionally having a car or two in it (I believe you have to go back to 2021 before you see a single one).

But, back to *your* point, someone's obviously land banking by waiting for adjacent properties to come onto the market for acquisition and for assembling a larger site for future development and willing to offer up cheap rent right now just to keep it going derelict like those buildings on that upper block of Congress.

Kind of a "duh" statement, I know.

Fair, it might have been 1992. I recall it because I ate at players. Probably has some under age attained beers. I walked out, saw TCBY and wondered, wtf is that place. I think it was next to the Pizza Hut/Inn. I was young, dumb and full of curiosity among other things. Walked in, actually asked what it stood for iirc, and then bought some.

Never returned.

So I did, in fact, go there, once. Yes, it's true, there were no cars nor anyone else inside.

Now we’re really derailing the thread, but I got more curious-er and looked up the adjoining tracts. The same owner owns the two tracts directly adjacent down Lavaca. One is almost 10k sf on the rolls at about $4.8 million and the other is 5,200 sf at $2.6 million. So all-in, he’s got himself about 0.5 acre of CBD zoned dirt.

I was out of town that summer after my freshman year and missed all the fun.  I heard it on the radio driving across the Denison Dam to my aunt's lake house (trailer) in Colbert OK.  Parents were a little scared about me returning in September, but I convinced them it was an aberration.

I miss the Plantation.  Wife and I liked their chicken fried steak (about once a semester.)  Used to get a late night (2 AM) omelet there with my page editor after putting the Texan to bed.
