Instead we want to spend 100s of millions on coddling leeches because it makes some people feel good.

agreed. i'm for equality but aisd is just punishing kids in the name of equality. in this case, let the pta teachers funded schools continue to fund/hire teachers and then divert some of this bullshit homeless money to those schools who do not have pta funding to hire teachers. it's fucking win/win for the kids. no, we'd rather throw money away on giving the homeless fucking everything because fuck kids and investing in the future.

Yep, obvi funding the homeless will do way more for the city than funding a better education for our kids :( Race to the bottom, even for educating our children. I have several friends that will now be sending their kids to Trinity, St Andrews, etc for these exact reasons. Nothing is going to stop the widening gap

AISD is going to see an even bigger exodus to private schools than they already have. Enrollments are dropping and that was primarily due to just how poorly AISD handled CV19, now you add this to the mix and you will see people in these more affluent schools bailing at even greater clips.

My youngest is at Casis and will be at O'Henry next year and his incoming 6th grade class is down roughly 50% from numbers last year.

Might be the plan?  Frees up resources for their targets, it’s not like you stop paying taxes when you put your child in private school.

Cabo Steve has dibs when they close and consolidate some schools. That’s valuable real estate they are wasting.

Is it true that AISD spends $11,000/year on each east side students vs. $7,000 for west side kids.... and that’s why the west side PTAs are raising money to pay for additional staff to make up for their shortage?

The ability to raise funds from the community is a blessing. Not all areas areas have that capability because the wealth simply isn't there.  Smart wealthier communities use the asset to enhance their basic programs.  Many thrive under that model.

We all agree to that model. I'm in the rich side. I don't mind my taxes helping those kids who have no say on how much their parents make. The "rich" side gives more money to the poor side so the rich side funds teachers via PTA. AISD says that's unfair to the poor side even tho the poor side already gets more tax payer money. Beyond fucking stupid. Again just punishing kids.

Use fucking money earmarked for the homeless to pay for more teachers on the poor side, or just more teachers in general. It's not that fucking hard. Dipship city leadership makes it hard because they don't make side money solving actual community problems.

This highlights just one issue that can be better spent by the homeless money.

In 2018-2019, AISD spent an average of $14,067 per student, but they only spent $6,436 per student at Casis Elementary School. So yes, Casis absolutely needs this additional source of funding.

Doesn't seem crazy to me.  Seems exactly like what the people who are being put in charge have preached.  When bussing (the most failed experiment of all failed experiments) didn't get rammed through a couple of years ago, this was the next logical step.  No one gives a shit about improving the poorly performing schools.  The agenda is about punishing the successful ones.  I don't understand it, but it's the people that Austin keeps electing.  Lupo ran on a platform of this bullshit, and has never hidden her hatred from anyone not from her neighborhood.  This is exactly what they've been working towards.  I guess the joke will be on them when there are even fewer students, and therefore way less money, in AISD in the long run.

I won't be surprised if the state takes over the district, frankly.  Right before Covid hit AISD was one bad grade away from this happening anyway, and they're just doubling down on nonsense that will make things worse.  I assume everyone will get a do-over due to the pandemic, but if this is what leadership believes passes for running a school district it's only a matter of time.

The most insane part to me is that none of this happened before they slashed budgets back in 2011.  And the things being funded by the PTAs are often things that are mandated by federal law be provided by the district, e.g. reading intervention instructors for dyslexic kids.  Fuck them for not paying for this shit in the first place.  Somedays it feels like the twilight zone in this town.

My DIL, something of a perfectionist, resigned from her “upper” administration job at AISD headquarters because of the stupidity & stubbornness she saw running the school district for years. I’m surprised she could stand it for as long as she did.

Wonder if the administration will ever release the real numbers of kids they lost all track of during the past three semesters? 😉
