I thought I wanted to see more of the story of Gilead but the more they show the less makes sense.

Why do they have to have armed guards every few feet in neighborhoods of their own territory?

This last ep shows that they do hang handmaids.   Hasn't June done enough to warrant being hanged given their intolerance to insubordination, heresy and trying to start a rebellion?     They haven't scarred her or disfigured her like they did other handmaids for less.     Shit they cut off Serena's finger but June can still sneak around eavesdropping and openly talk shit to commanders and their wives?

Yeah I keep thinking "How does June keep getting away with this shit?"

What was that garbage???

Sweet Valley Handmaids all mean girling the weak one and now June can get someone to break with just her crazy eyes and crazy smirk??

This season is hard to watch. The writing is terrible.

The Handmaid's Tale writers need to go consult with the Duffer Brothers on how to build a compelling story that goes somewhere in the 3rd season. Not finished with Stranger Things 3 yet but it's already running laps around Handmaid's Tale Season 3.

That's our plan. We went out of town for vacation the week of the 4th and haven't watched the 2 since we've returned. We've had no desire to watch this week to week. We're just going to wait till the season's almost up and then catch up on days leading up to the finale.

so we're gonna go from a miserable aunt lydia episode to...a bottle episode in a hospital room.

"you don't think we can do something worse than last week?  challenge accepted!"

i feel pot committed, but i'm limping to the finish line on this one.

Havent watched this new one but that last one was a big "Fuck you!  We do what we want" to anyone complaining about the story.     No one wants/needs to know Aunt Lydia's backstory.   Has me about ready to tap out.   Its hard for me to give up on shows I've committed to but damn they are really trying my resolve.

regarding this past episode:

i just skimmed a few reviews.  basically critics liked, but didn't love this episode.  they felt it was the best in several weeks, but the reason it wasn't better is because of the plot fumbling and character arc running-in-place that's been happening for several weeks.  maybe the season will rebound and i'll see it as a better outing, but i'm not there yet.  not even close.

I didn’t understand the Lydia backstory and how she turned 180 in a matter of seconds. By that I mean  I understand perhaps what they were trying to say but it made zero sense.

in the backstory I got a kick thinking how the principal  was married to Julia stiles in silver linings playbook to now dating aunt Lydia.  Unfortunate trajectory.

Her backstory was disjointed as hell which made even less necessary to be told.  It was a complete throwaway ep.

Spoiler

If the principal had turned into a rapist on NYE, then I could see Lydia being traumatized and blaming (incorrectly) the young mom who pushed her to get out there and date.   Instead the principal seemed like a great guy that just wasn’t ready to have sex with her that night.  He came across like he hadn’t been with anyone since his wife died.   Lydia’s response to that was to burn the world.   Makes zero sense for someone that appeared to be very compassionate a few minutes earlier in the ep.

Precisely.   I asked my wife about that.   She just flipped out completely cause dude didn't want to have sex with her right then and there.   He didn't say he didn't want to be with her.   Didn't insult her or anything.   The flip was completely unwarranted unless there was something that wasn't told.   Maybe if it came out that the principal was sleeping with the young mother or something.   Otherwise it made absolutely no sense.

it's starting to feel like the beginning of s3 of lost, when they were in cages for 2-3 episodes (but felt like 10).  that had one of the more satisfying conclusions and the s3 finale is one of the best television episodes of all time.

something tells me this isn't that.

That was also back when quality serial dramas like LOST and The West Wing would pump out 23 episodes per season. That sort of thing is unheard of now.

yep.

it's just so frustrating when a show like this outlasts its source material, begs for more episodes and more seasons, then tells everyone it has no place to go.

and every time they seem to go in a direction i'm into, that storyline disappears.  where is canada?  where is that dude from hawaii or whatever?  they just skipped months ahead and zero word about the return of the "kidnapped" baby - that was all anyone cared about for 2-3 episodes.

and where are my fucking marthas i swear to god.

Honestly, it felt like the infamous "Fly" episode from Breaking Bad. As a stand-alone product, it wasn't terrible. But given the pace of the last several, this needs to pick up soon (I fully realize this isn't an original thought).

I'm really hoping June's internal struggle is done now, and her steely new resolve gets us through the rest of the season to a satisfying conclusion. It certainly felt like this was meant to be some sort of inflection point in her character development (Not holding my breath).

Is there really any doubt that the baby in Canada won't be kidnapped and brought back?  I actually thought it was going to happen in the airport scene.  Let her hold the baby for a second while someone shocks him with a cattle prod like in Casino.  Have someone help him while she walks away with the baby.

I definitely thought there was no way she was gonna leave without the baby.   I was pissed with Luke for breaking down and even letting her hold Nicole.

I get that Luke has to take for a baby now... even if it's not his... but why hasn't he and his fellow expats formed some militia in Canada in order to fuck shit up in Gilead... almost like the Fenian Raids but in reverse? There's a ton of good ideas on this thread, Hulu, if you're reading.

so this was a step in the right direction...i guess?

i can't really tell anymore.

this should've been episode 7 or 8 and the last 2-3 shouldn't have happened at all - there was no point.  this should've been the episode right after the waterfords going to washington and the intro of chris meloni.

not sure why we needed an isolated episode with aunt lydia's backstory and then a bottle episode in the hospital featuring the death of a character we barely knew and didn't like.

sick burn with june addressing commander waterford post-ceremony.  still wayyyyy too much lydia this season.  are they showcasing her for an emmy or something?  she's got like second most screen time.

get the marthas in position and wait for my orders.

It was better but like a sort of solid shit is better than explosive diarrhea.

It’s still shitty if you put your finger in it.

That fight scene?? Ridamndiculous.

Meloni is big dude with massive hands, arms, upper body. That punch and head slam would have put June’s lights out.

But she somehow stays conscious and takes him out with a gotdamn Bic hotel pen - the cheapest, flimsiest pens manufactured.

She’s been a Handmaid for 5 years. She hasn’t been working out and they deliberately feed her shit to fatten her up for breeding.

She probably couldn’t even get that pen through his starched shirt much less his skin and jugular vein.

And WOW! What luck! It just so happens the Martha she saved from the colonies is the one to find her!

And 52 kids???? From a place that has dudes with automatic weapons every 5 feet?

Get the fuck out.

And Fred has always been an evil cockpickle but he’s never been dumb.

We’re supposed to believe he’d just follow along behind an AMERICAN spy, that close to the Canadian border and not even catch a clue?

And fucking Luke sitting in the front seat of one of the Army trucks? There’s hundreds of wives that were stolen from their husbands and forced into Handmaidenary - why the hell are Luke and June so special?

Again, get the fuck out.

And I’m going to be pisssssssed if Serena gets “coconuts and a baby” like Spy Guy promised her when he first approached her. She deserves punishment just as much as Fred. Talk about a gender traitor. And don’t even get me started if they even entertain letting her have anything to do with Holly (I refuse to call her Nichole).

I apparently had a lot of thoughts about what was arguably the “best” episode of the season. Tells you how bad the rest of them were.

It’s basically a comic book show now featuring SuperJune.

Like I'm glad shit happened but I agree with these points.

the only one i don't really agree with was the martha at the hotel.  you had to know after she handpicked those 5 that at least one of them would play a part at some point.

the whole 52 kids thing is a little silly.  she keeps acting like she needs more vans to get them out.  getting them out isn't the hard part - it's separating them from their families or removing them from their schools like some sort of surgical military extraction.  gonna bug me if they gloss over that aspect of the plan.

this whole series has made serena out to be more than she is.  i guess we're supposed to think that fred was so fixated on pleasing her, that he kept driving (even after complaining about it).  nfw.

luke being in a truck didn't bother me.  the kidnapping plotline is a pretty big one, and is definitely at the center of canada-us-gilead relations.  after they talked about lawrence being arrested for war crimes, you just knew something like this was coming.  if he was in the loop, he easily could've been like, "if this goes down, i want to be there."  also it's a tv show.

the fight, agreed, stupid.  once he saw her in the lobby, i was like, "he's either gonna fuck her or die trying".  yep.

this season is meandering all over the place.  my guess is the writers room was like, "ok, we're dropping 3 at once, so at the end of episode 3, we'll establish the marthas.  and we need a good ending to the season, so here's what episodes 11-13 will look like."  and then someone was like, "what about episodes 4-10?"  and the room was like "maybe aunt lydia backstory who really cares lol?"

these should be 10 episode seasons.  or 8, if they can't figure 10 out.

What the fuck?

Yes, Eleanor was a possible liability. But Joseph’s entire motivation for going along with June Bourne’s dumb mission is to GET HIS WIFE OUT!

Now that she’s dead - and he’s definitely suspicious of June - what reason does he have to keep cooperating?

The two commanders - Waterford and Winslow - that have been undermining him are out of the picture. He has his place of power back.

He has no reason to escape any longer.

And ratting our her big escapade could earn him some serious political capital in Gilead.

June has done some seriously stupid stuff but letting Eleanor die is by far the dumbest.

And I cannot believe Spy Guy and Luke and Moira are allowing Serena any contact with that baby.

Jesus this show is just a beating now.
