2019 Women's World Cup - Do It Back to Back

Why is "Giving a Bear Hug to an attacking player to prevent her racing up field, right in front of the ref" just a warning?

No, it shouldn't be a red card, but it was not even subtle. There was no attempt to play the ball, it was just a plain and obvious bear hug to prevent an attacking move.

That's "a professional foul" and should be a straight yellow.

This team is a well oiled machine. I need to make it a priority to watch every game from here on out because we might not see a women's team like this again for a long, long time.

Wait until you see the talent coming up through the ranks.  The girls development in the US is insane.  Every city in the country has an all-star team playing together from the age of 10 that practices as much as any girls around the world with just as good coaching and only play against other elite girls.  We are talking 1000s of girls in every age group.

even if we don't massacre the remainder of the field, one thing i am willing to get enchubbened over is that the "entitled to a place on the squad" thing has finally been put to pasture with the women's program.

Next stop...

The US MEN'S National Team.

We've been waiting for this for about 20 years.

I was thinking about this.

Sweden's total population is just about 10,000,000 and I'm not sure that Soccer is the #1 girls sport. (Winter sports are huge and I think that Netball or some kind of Hand Ball is big there, don't know.)

The US has 10 states with about 10,000,000 or more in population and I'm fairly certain that soccer is the #1 girls sport.  The US could theoretically soon field 10 teams as good as Sweden.

The list of US States with 5 million or more, plus Alabama, which has a soccer-friendly climate most of the year and is a sports-hungry state.

I really really really want to see Thailand win their match against Chile. 0-0 at halftime.

It would be nice. They've already scored this WC, so they've shown that they can put the ball in the net.

It would also insure that Cameroon goes through.

But staring at that tie score, I just think how close Argentina was to possibly going through. According to a friend with daughters who lives in BA, the Argentine soccer federation (AFA) just recently agreed to pay the players and provide training facilities, but no specifics have been discussed. So Argentina rolled out an amateur team (or at least a team of players who had to pay their way when playing for the national team) and almost made it to the knockout stages.

That might be the same case for Chile. I think that it was last WC for Colombia or maybe Ecuador/Peru... (some CONMEBOL north Andean country that tied or beat France) Each Women's World Cup shames more countries into providing for their women as well as their men.

Doesn't Sweden touching the ball first negate the offsides?

wtf?  If the offside player wasn't there, the defender that played it would just let it go through to the other defender

Yeah, this seems dumb. The only reason the ball is played through is because the player was where they were - offsides.

In the EPL, that is called offside 9 times out of 10 and the only reason it's not 10 out of 10 is because they miss calls (the flag never went up).

It's almost like the rules change due to VAR.

That makes sense now that I think about it. Thanks.

No idea why they didn't call it then.

Also who is our #23 because good Lord she is hot.

Yeah, Lloyd was clearly offside and affected the play. Not sure what the call was in the end (watching on mute).

Well the call was "draw box with fingers, signal goal".

But the interpretation has to be that since the player didn't get the ball - no offside. It just doesn't make sense since the ball was clearly played to Lloyd (it was just deflected).

Lloyd with the shirt tug and now the bad foul near the box. Dumb.

Lloyd is going to kick your ass if you keep talking about her like that.

And yeah. Christine Press is 23. She's hotter on camera than in pics.

wtf the goal was not offsides but now is being changed to an own goal on Sweden?

I haven't seen a replay of the goal itself, but from what I am reading it looks like it was meant to be a cross into the middle of the box that was deflected in.
