100% chance I drink whatever liquid is leftover in that dish straight from the bowl.

But only after you put the toasted baguette in the pool.

Very simple and quick recipe with a cheat from the HEB. Sweat one minced shallot, one minced leek, and four garlic in a dutch oven or deep pan. Add about a couple cups of white wine, bring to a boil and cook down.  Clean and add the mussels (2# in this case, 2 servings). Toss in the wine sauce, high heat, and cover, check frequently and pull the mussels when they open. To the remaining liquid incorporate a few tablespoons of the sauce, add the mussels back in, toss and serve up with some garnish.

Technically my wife (no pics) made it. But, while the venue, setting and even maker have changed, I have had this meal on this day for the past 41ish years and it’s the only day I will eat it.  If I am ever on death row, this is what I will request. I am stuffed.  C8B4E0C2-074D-412B-AB22-F2B2EF8B1450.thumb.jpeg.9765a5bff43612e55ae07d12280bf902.jpeg0CDE39A7-A2A3-4893-9C73-88E5617C5ADF.thumb.jpeg.fcbc9bf8142391ed6bba87cf193cc203.jpeg

I am trying to interpret this still life. I am assuming meat loaf. Green beans properly cooked with bacon. Mashed potatoes. Wine in a crystAl goblet?

Im not getting why the separate dishes? Why only on your birthday; this is something we make all the time, minus the wine for a flagon of iced tea. What am I missing?

Nothing too crazy. Mom was not much into cooking but would always make meatloaf for my birthday.  This became kind of a thing to where I always wanted it on that day and it’s the only time I eat it so it probably tastes better to me than it should. Mom passed 6 years ago so now my wife makes it. My wife doesn’t like food touching so that’s the reason for separate dishes.

You pay your dishwasher by the hour or by dish?  Wife is making Paula Deen's meatloaf this week, love meatloaf but not particularly a fan of that version.

If there is a least cost effective way to do anything, my wife has figured it out.

Same meal for 41 years even on your birthday is impressive.  We never did anything like that so I didn’t think of that. I was googling looking up Oct. 1 for some strange cultural or religious holiday that eats meatloaf on that day….

I’ve spent most of my adult life making up for the fact that when I was a kid I didn’t appreciate how awesome meatloaf is.

Do you ever order it at a restaurant? I too am a big fan, but like spaghetti, I seldom take the chance on someone else’s effort.

It’s not on the menus for many restaurants I go to these days, but in my experience meatloaf can be pretty good at a quality southern diner.

Yea it’s not something you see often these days at restaurants. If I remember right Moonshine has a really good meatloaf I think it was venison mix or something also, it’s been a while.  That and Hoover’s is really good.

Is this just dark roux, trinity, chicken, and potatoes? Looks similar to gumbo.

nvm, missed your ingredients in the first pic. Looks interesting

Treebeards in Houston has a good meatloaf with red sauce.

Similar to gumbo, but much smaller amounts of roux and stock, no bell pepper, and a turnip. Season however you like.

Most any plate lunch type spot usually has it.

It’s becoming something seen on some bbq joints menus. 407 BBQ in Argyle has a smoked meatloaf that will knock your dick in the dirt.

Creamy tomato basil soup.  I like to add some roasted red peppers to change the flavor a bit.  Week old crunchy baguette and parm.

Had a beef tenderloin that had been in the freezer for awhile so today I said fuck it. Sous vide, seared on the Blackstone, sliced and put on Kings Hawaiian with American, Provolone, buns brushed with rosemary butter and sprinkled with parm. Slammed and went hard like a mofo.

My wife doesn't like that either, but she has yet to insist on separate dishes. Her neurosis is balanced by the practical considerations of how many dishes are going to have to be cleaned after dinner.
