I doubt Trump will resign, and the public will support conviction and many of the Republican Senators will subjectively want to convict. If they fail to do so, they will break the impeachment process, show the country their true colors, and harm, perhaps irreparably, the Republican Party.

Trump will resign if the alternative is prison.

Once again, the Senate will never vote to convict when they can work out a deal to force resignation. Regardless of the President or circumstances, the Senate should never vote to convict a sitting president.  They don’t want an acquittal vote on their record if the evidence is overwhelming or even potentially politically untenable.  They will avoid voting at all costs unless the case is weak.

Unless I’m mistaken, if Trump resigns it’s Pence.  If Pence were to resign first, any replacement would have to be confirmed by majorities in both House and Senate.  So no Ivanka.  Keep in mind Pence is up to his gargler in all this.

Pence isn’t resigning first.  He’s Trump’s get out of federal prison free card.

The State of New York will put Trump in prison.

No doubt.  The guy is super fucked.  At the very least they have his taxes and those are more than enough to get him some jail time.  I also don't think the feds letting him resign if exchange for any potential charges being dropped would have much bearing on NY.  They're out for blood - and they're gonna get it.  Poor Trump.

Devin Nunes is the Ranking member of the GOP on the HIC and he is all in for TrumpWorld. *Will Hurd (TX) is also on the committee. I haven't seen any commentary by him but I may have missed it. I think a lot of Trump supporters are unaware that there are Republicans on the committee at all.

*The other GOP members are:

Mike Conaway (TX), Mike Turner (OH), Brad Winstrup (OH), Chris Stewart (UT), Rick Crawford (AR), Elise Stefanik (NY), John Ratcliffe (TX)

i have to disagree with your police work here, Lou.

Hubris and narcissism and dementia is a hell of a combo. He will never actually believe that he could end up in prison. He will never resign.

He honestly believes his own bullshit.

Trump has a little leverage in resignation deal.  He can put the country and Senate through absolute hell if he doesn’t get the no-prosecution deal he wants.

the sdny doesn't give a shit about what the country goes through, and they have no incentive to let it go.

Trump just wants to come out a winner and cheat the system.  He has a long history of spinning his losses as a victory.  I have no doubt he will fight to avoid resignation but not to the death, in the end, he will run away to fight another day.

He can pardon himself from federal crimes. So the SDNY is a non issue. He will grant himself a pardon. Of course there will be all sorts of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Not to mention Pence may pardon him.

The State of New York, however, likely has zero fucks to give.

Nope. He’s cornered. He leaves office (impeachment conviction or resignation), he goes to jail. So, he will fight like a cornered dog to stay in office
And he’ll destroy the country/planet/universe to protect himself. He has no concern for any other human being. An earth without Donald Trump as a god doesn’t deserve to exist, so who cares if it all burns down?
Things are about to get incredibly dangerous.

we've been telling hugo this for 6 months.

resigning is admitting defeat.

resigning with all sorts of elaborate pardons (needing people to help him) is even worse.

Trump cares about the perception others have of him, it’s his only vulnerability.  What is left of his image is what he wants to protect.

It’s probably why he refuses to release his tax returns.

Resigning is whatever Trump says it is.  This is a man that creates the reality he wants to live in.  As long as he can convince others his reality exists, he still has power.

But what do they do when a President refuses to resign? I just don’t see Trump agreeing to resign for any reason.

I’d like to see the House do a two-fer.  Pence is not clean in this Ukraine matter.  He can also get indicted sitting office unlike potus if I’m not mistaken.  Would like to see a special one unsealed for the VP

You really think Trump can’t be blackmailed into resigning?  You know, the guy that is obviously being blackmailed already?

DJ has a little over a week until his next rally in Tupelo, Mississippi. He is taking longer to recuperate after he goes to events. The stress and poor health are taking a toll on what was arguably a pretty small mind. I agree with BrisketTexan in that the worse the President feels physically and the more he deteriorates, the more he will act out as events spiral out of his control. His actions will mirror that. He didn't handle his Cabinet meeting this week very well, and there are more items that are needing attention.

This is very true.  His whole raison d'etre is Manhattan society's refusal to accept him.  If those douchewads had been more accepting of him, and Graydon Carter and Spy hadn't made fun of his hands, he'd be a low profile rich grifter.

He can accept peripheral, deniable humiliation:  numerous bankruptcies, business failures, paying off whores, all that.  But a conviction by judicial process, appealed and affirmed is a bridge too far.

Tax returns?  Financial records?  How about some tapes?  Lordy...

Trump is a guy that illegally paid off a porn star for what?

The dude is weak and easily manipulated.  He’s not a strong man as much as he wants to be.

Goes back farther than that. It's something that he got as a child. His whole life has been an effort to preserve his own skin.

yeah, and he will sell his soul, his friends, his family, his country out - to remain president.  terrible shit is already out there.  he breaks the law every day.

if some taxes somehow see the light of day, he'll lie about them.  the pornstar stuff everyone knows and he still denies it, and only cohen has paid for it.

i understand that he's easily manipulated.  the reason is because he already has what he wants - he's in charge.  he'll continue to do whatever he needs to do to stay in charge (like the illegal act of having hostile foreign nations investigate his potential political opponents).  there's 200 pages about him obstructing justice, yet he continues to do it.  he's being investigated for having people dig up dirt on biden, and he'll 100% start doing it on warren (if he hasn't already).

he's breaking every possible law to remain president.  he's not going to walk away, even with a gun to his head.

Correct. If he can’t have the win, he’ll blow everything up. If he can’t have this country, nobody can. Seriously, that’s the level of narcissist psychosis we’re dealing with here.
And the GOP continues to happily strap more dynamite to his suicide vest. And honestly, I think it’s because they’ve bought into that same ideology - let us stay in power, or we’ll destroy everything.
It’s classic terrorist tactics.

at this point, if you told me the senate voted to remove him, i would still put it at 50/50 that he still wouldn't leave.

Is it clear they didn't know about it? And besides that, the only reason the aid was released was that the story blew up. Had the whistleblower not come forward, the withheld money likely forces Zelenskyy to announce the investigation--that was the point. If you break into a bank and run off when the alarm goes off, you're still a bankrobber even if you didn't get the money.

Fuck these lying traitors.

I'm actually a little surprised that the GOP voted to censure Schiff. I mean, not terribly surprised, since their orange god demanded it, but a little surprised considering they all know damn well he didn't deserve it...

it seems like this would be the time for them to try and get out in front of this and spin testimony in favor of Trump.

are any Rs that are in these committees doing that?

Fox News’ website is running a headline this morning that Taylor’s testimony was ‘Destroyed’ by Ratcliffe. Per McCarthy, “We can’t really talk about it.... Schaffer’s won’t let us talk about what happened.”

Congrats to the loyalty oaths from the two he named in the tweet. Ratcliffe on the HIC joined Nunes in choruses of "Witch Hunt of West Wing," and "Where in the World is the Whistleblower?" Ratcliffe spoke with FN last night, so DJ is directing viewers to ignore the testimony and enjoy the songs. That's my take anyway. Who cares if it's true folks?! We have an all star cast this evening!
