True, but kids are living in a different world these days. The internet, social media, and smart phones have changed adolescence in a way that most of us cannot relate to.

Meh, maybe I knew some messed up people in my youth but nothing is really different than it was in the past.

well, a girl on my niece's volleyball team went to rehab this past year for porn addiction. there were videos of her being shared.
that's kind of different.

Colleague of mine has a daughter in an electronics free boarding school in Switzerland after she had a complete nervous breakdown due in large part to social media. That’s different.

I don’t think anyone is saying differently. But the different technology has definitely added a new level of shit. Now if some jack ass guy makes a video of him with a girl, even a “good” girl, and it gets passed around, that is a lot different than just rumors or name calling.

Not to mention all that shit went away when you went home from school. Now you continually harass someone all night on social media, etc.

Agree with this.

Teenagers in previous generations could make bad decisions and they would have to live with hearsay afterwards. Some stuff would stick around longer than others, but most people eventually move on to the next thing.

Teenagers today make bad decisions and there is permanent digital evidence of that thanks to smartphones and social media. A bad post on social media has a much greater impact than a distasteful comment in person with friends. Bullying on social media spreads much more quickly and visibly. Hooking up with the wrong person may result in nudes or vids floating around school, whereas previously they would just have the temporary shame and some degree of deniability. Many of these things can do permanent damage and carry over into college or their careers.

Here is a more innocent example:

At the beginning of high school a gal got so drunk at a party she shit on the bathroom floor instead of in the toilet. Everyone called her the party pooper for the next couple of years. Of course only saying it behind her back. Imagine had people made a video of that and it got texted out, posted on whatever platform. It would be out there for fucking ever.

Now imagine it’s not something so stupid, but your daughter playing Chinese finger cuffs and it gets put out on the internet. Yeah, teenagers have always been shitty, but things have changed a bit you have to admit.

It's a fair point.  How profound is the difference is the issue.

I didn't focus on that, because the only issue raised in the show thus far (just saw the pilot), was the "slut page."

It seems that the mental health of today's youth is more fragile than in the past, or maybe we're just more aware of it or hypersensitized to it.  Some are attributing it to online "life." Not sure if it's correlation or causation, but there seems to be something there.

blonde girls mom is Frank's Pretty Woman.  Was taking me a minute to place her, she plays a good drunk/stoned.

Are you talking about Alanna Ubach, the one playing Suze Howard?

This generation has so many advancements and ways to get into trouble its totally different today.  My kid can order anything on Amazon he wants and it gets delivered to him in 2 days.  ANYTHING.

This show is way way out there....but I'll probably keep watching it.

Less Than Zero says hi.

If you're talking book, then yes. If you're talking movie, then I'm getting more of a Rules Of Attraction vibe. Especially the narration reminding me of Shannyn Sossoman.

watched both last night. the sex use i think is nothing new with the kiddos today. neither is the drugs. it's just the apps that allow the kids to hook up and find each other and the instant recording at the palm of their hands of banging a fat girl from behind.

I think there’s probably something to the scene where the guy is getting immediately aggressive with the sex and is surprised she doesn’t like it (because that’s what porn is like).

This show is incredibly sad and disturbing. As a parent you feel for the main characters and how fucked up they are from their childhood experiences. Psycho closet jock dude had no chance in life after seeing his dad like that. Main character chick has daddy issues and psych disorders and tried drugs at a young age.

I have a friend who is older with grown kids... He lost one son to a drug overdose and his other son is an addict in and out of rehab. I feel like drugs nowadays are harder and easier to access than when I was younger. Opiates and heroin terrify me. Seeing my friend's story and shows like this give me anxiety about my kids futures. Add in social media and it makes me want to raise my kids in a cave out in the wilderness.

Hormones as a source of teen angst and action hasn't changed. The environment has changed profoundly since my boomer suburban days.

Our first looks at naked women were Playboy for the most part. Then there was the leap to Penthouse and finally the spelunking photos from Hustler after I'd left high school. Porn video showing everything and every fetish readily available constantly must be changing the sex landscape.

Social media all the time, again, has to change the landscape.

Constant exposure to advertising even while relaxing in your room has to change the landscape.

Teens are living in a whole new world that I don't envy. You form your worldview in those years and what they get for input is chaotic pandering to every desire all the time.

We'll just have to see how it all comes out because there seems to be little anyone can do about it.

Yeah, very enjoyable. I know a lot of people bag on magnolia, but I love it and this episode was putting off major magnolia vibes.

Yeah. Did this show just get really good?

There were several scenes in that episode tonight that subverted expectations in unexpected and welcome ways.  The Eric Dane/Jules scenes particularly.

This last episode was the best yet, the scene between Jules and Nate was unexpected and riveting.

I'm also enjoying Kat's character.  Girl is owning her slutiness and it will be interesting to see where it goes.

At the very least, we weren't bombarded w/ dick pics the entire show.

I’m hooked like Rue on this show - Both improving and making interesting choices with each passing week.

As someone noted above, this makes me want to raise kids in the deep woods...

The show seems to be purposely obfuscating where this takes place to give a sense of "Anytown USA".  The bike ride through the orange grove a couple of episodes ago that culminated in the view of the Rockies, for instance.  I mean perhaps that type of geography exists in California, but those didn't seem like Southern California mountains.  I don't recall any other geography hints.  The license plates are certainly not giving anything away.

i really like how they are portraying Cal Jacobs. our first intro (in the hotel with Jules) and then the macho speech to Nate in the flashback really set him up to be this physical, potentially violent man, like someone who might literally kill to keep his secret. he initially seemed so strong and on the edge...

but then the interaction with Jules at the carnival, throwing himself on her mercy, begging her, and the motel encounter this past episode, so sad and lost, trying to make a human connection; puking at the high school bc he was so freaked out...

his son has serious violence issues, but Cal is just kind of sad, living this alternative life in secret. totally not what i expected his character to be like.

Yep, and did not go the way I thought.  First you'd think it'd be a sweet meetup.  Then it turned sour, and you're thinking...is he going to push her in the river or kill her or something? Amnd then it just ended.

Also this. Rue will have a very hard and bad fall off here.

Finally got on board with this one and am now all caught up. This is a great show. Hard to take at times, but it’s so well done. The cinematography is so damned good.

1) I'm thankful that I live in the sticks.  Doesn't mean that my kids are/will be void of these opportunities, but it's nothing like an urban area.

2) I agree with what everyone has said about social media vs. when we were growing up in the 80s/90s (DOB 81).  We did stupid shit and moved on.  I loathe social media.  My wife and I don't allow our oldest to have SnapChat, and we're unapologetic about it.  I don't care that "everyone else has it."  There will come a day when she gets it, but 13 yo isn't that day.

They’re not really trying that hard - To me, a former CA resident, it’s clearly California. Hell, the license plates are a straight rip of the old Cali plate style. It reads like Placerville or somewhere in the eastern Sacramento suburbs.

I could see that. My cousins grew up in woodland/Davis to the west and it's pretty similar as well.

Did my man McKay just play the recruiting hat game with anonymous Cali school, Nevada and fucking Tulsa?

EDIT: Holy shit, Bob Ross and The Wire references. Rue’s a good sister.
