Collateral?  I thought the government was going after those as part of his asset forfeiture.

He's offering up his jet and $77m dollar mansion as collateral.

I'd only agree to this if they move in a couple thousand inmates to keep him company at his house until the trial starts.

Rikers Island is pretty close and crowded.

Is this from 'Eyes Wide Shut'? If not, it's creepily apropo regardless, so +rep anyway.

This whole secretly raping models at parties thing has been reminding me of that movie all this past week.

The conspiracy theory about that movie is that Stanley Kubrick was killed for making it.

Not only that, but if you’re planning to flee the country you’re writing off the NYC mansion anyway.  “Yes, you can take a lien on this house I’ll never be able to return to again and that you will seize anyway.  You’re really breaking my balls, here.”

Exactly what I thought. If he's gonna flee the country it won't be in his plane and he can't take the house with him.

According to the interviews with victims and former prosecutors in both New York and Florida, Epstein was lining up 2-4 "massages" per day, on a daily basis.  This has been documented back to 2000, so almost 20 years.  That's just the time period he was under investigation.  It's not like he just woke up at 47 and decided to be a pederast.  The potential number of victims is staggering.  He's like the Wilt Chamberlain of child rapists.

A member of a fairly famous rock band once told me he was "the Wilt Chamberlain of fat chicks."

"And you know what," he went on. "A fat chick don't have to still be fat, physically. It's a state of mind, man. That oral fixation. Some fat chicks are fat and some fat chicks are skinny, but they all love to suck and fuck." He was talking about adults, of course.

Vic Mackey is in a rock band?

It's hard to imagine a movie like this existing today, and especially not as a critical darling, French auteur at the helm or not.

I don't know that child rape was more acceptable in the 70 and 80s. There is surely horrible negligence in allowing the child Drew Barrymore to party with adults and become a drug addict at a very young age.

I had always viewed Woody Allen's Manhattan as a stellar movie. Allen's character's deep involvemtn with a high schooler raised an eyebrow at first, but I went along with it after the initial shock. Mariel Hemmingway, the perfect object for a Svengali as a contrast to the  real women of Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton worked dramatically.

Now I wonder at my complacence. My disposition is changed. A full grown man is picking up a high schooler at her parents's house. Troubling to say the least. Dramatically, it still works as the fleeting ideal of love, but it's gross and selfish and exploitive.

Can this be a product of the boomer notion that we will never be old, never be not young and the advertising pandering to that notion? I haven't a clue.

With Me, too, increasing stories of pedophiles, and the sexist posturing on the internet ("would" written by internet nobodies when looking at a famous woman they'd have no chance with) has made me realize what a shit world there is out there for women. My God, Baylor and the lack of punishment for institutionally punishing victims only emphasized this shit world.

Things must change. Epstein must be brought very low if the allegations are true. The non-men who partook of the sex slaves should be destroyed as well.

The whole thing is sickening, sad, and anger inducing.  Wealthy predators having a good time with no regard for whom they exploit or what it means about who they are themselves.

I increasingly take up the cause of women. Feminism seemed to be about equal pay and opportunity. It's so much more.

Disturbing. Do you know what they were doing together? Allen has at least stuck with Soon Yi. Taking up with your lover's young daughter while still involved with the mother is an absolutes despicable act.

I was a huge fan of Allen's. You look at his solidly moral stances in his movies including Manhattan and Crime and Misdemeanors, and you can't help but admire his intellect and humanity. The betrayal of Mia Farrow was quite devastating to my opinion of him.

Meh. I'm not a huge fan of his work but I don't let an artist's personal life affect what I think of their art. Soon-Yi was an adult when she and Woody began their relationship. They didn't break any laws. It's none of my business. Who am I to judge? Are you under the impression that Mia was completely faithful to Woody?

In 1956, the average age of an American woman when she first married was 20.1 years.  Now, it's 27.8 years.

Prior to 1929, girls in Scotland were allowed to marry at age 12.  In the pre-Revolutionary colonies, there is evidence of girls marrying as young as 9 years old, although I don't know if that implied cohabitation, sexual activity, etc.  Currently, 18 years is the minimum "general" age of marriage in the US, although exceptions can be granted, and in some states, those exceptions do not come with a minimum age.

There has been a cultural shift in attitudes regarding women's role in society, including college, employment, and sexual empowerment, among other things.  I suspect what we now consider "child rape" was just not viewed the same way decades ago.  I'm not saying it's right -- I'm just trying to add a little detail to the discussion.

I don't need to know about Mia's faithfulness to determine that secretly dating your lover's daughter is a foul move. Farrow discovered the relationship by finding pictures of Soon Yi in Woody Allen's bureau.

Generally, I don't care about the life of the artist in judging his work. Manhattan  is different to me now because a major element of the film reflects a major event in Allen's life. Crimes and Misdemeanors as well as Hannah and Her Sisters remain great films of his and there are others.

It's easy to hold contradictory positions when your constituency follows no moral compass and lacks capacity for honest reflection.  The dissonance never even registers.

I've probably watched Manhattan more than any Woody Allen film and I'm not sure what morality you are talking about, unless you find that letting love override all other rational decisions is moral.

But the final line is something like, "you have to have a little faith in people" so I guess that is pertinent to our discussion.

I should have written that he examines morality and integrity in his movies. Allen covers for his philandering friend in Manhattan; he rationalizes breaking the heart of the teenager with whom he is at least honest. His amusing speech beside the gorilla skeleton about moral character, as I recall, is solid.

I haven't seen the movie in quite awhile.

I think it's interesting that at the end of Manhattan and Hanna and Her Sisters he gives two differently shaded votes of confidence in faith in love. In Manhattan, he wants to believe the relationship with Mariel is the one for him and his life. Sadly, he blew it. In Hannah, his beloved (Diane Wiest)  tells him that she is pregnant in the closing scene. He has been told by doctors that he can't father children. He pauses and embraces her maybe believing in the miracle of sudden potency or just ignoring the possible infidelity of Wiest because he loves her so much.

Over time, Hannah and Crimes and Misdemeanors have stood out as maybe his best movies to me.

Great post for the Epstein thread, no?

Nice, do that with the money found in the safe on the private island too?

I would imagine that Epstein's current assets will be made available to his victims in the form of restitution and/or to satisfy civil suits, if he is found guilty.  A court will presumably decide what to do with anything left over.
