2019 Texas Volleyball

It’s one thing that we don’t play nearly the amount of matches as other teams, but it’s even worse when most of those games are away so I can’t watch without paying. This is Rice’s 11th match this season and we’ve only played 6. We have a good team and I just wanna watch them play damnit!

13-6 Rice leads the 2nd set. They are running us out of their gym.

Rice

The team that just came off a loss to Stephen F. Austin

Few top 5 teams just walk into Rice’s gym and comes out with a win!

Like come on. I hope this match wasn’t the 6-2 experiment. Rice is good enough to beat us if we play like crap and mess around.

Texas just didn't show up.

Rice is digging up everything.

And now Fisbeck is setting....

Pathetic. PATHETIC.  Get your crap match out of the way, Elliot. Every year without fail it seems.

Sorry yah had to witness that match. 🤘

It was rough. We took the kiddo who at 11 aspires to be a Longhorn. We were all disappointed. The first two games they couldn't get to their blocks at all. Every swing Rice got seemed like it was unobstructed.

I was at this game. Texas was just off. Looked like they weren't taking them serious. No fire. No enthusiasm.

As Js1 notes, this is a perennial problem for us.  Maybe all teams have this to one degree or another and it's inevitable.  But we seem to be pretty susceptible to believing our rankings (despite a recent loss).

Well, I can tell you from being down on the floor that this team doesn't have the chops to not bring it and still win like teams in the past. They look smaller and less athletic. Rice looked to be the same size as we did which is not characteristic of a typical Texas squad. They pounded us in the middle from the back row as well, and we just couldn't block anything. It was weird to watch. Previous Texas squads used to intimidate opposing hitters with their blocking. Rice wasn't afraid at all, and for good reason.

Other than youth, I don't think we're any more vulnerable than prior Texas teams when we have a letdown.  With Logan and Micaya playing six most of the time, we take a small DS off the court, but offset it with a 5-8 setter.  If Logan was as bad defensively as she was offensively, then that mean't a big ass hole back there some of the time.

The frosh middles don't lack athleticism, but they aren't used to blocking D-1 players and aren't "coordinated" yet.  That's a problem.

And, with three frosh on the floor a lot of the time, it is entirely possible that we hit a conditioning/fatigue wall.

I suppose it's hard to keep a bunch of elite athletes with little or no local (state/conference/region) competition playing at a high level that befits their ranking.  But it sure happens with regularity.

I was there too. Wish I hadn’t been. It may be the worst I’ve ever seen a Texas team play, but you have to give Rice a bit of credit too. The first 2 sets Lennon played as well as I’ve seen anyone play, and I’ve seen Kathryn Plummer live twice. She was simply unstoppable. Our MB’s could do nothing. Of course they didn’t do anything against Rice’s 5’10” outside hitter either the first 2 sets. Nor could Texas get anything to the floor. Rice had an answer to everything Texas was trying to do. For some reason Lennon went into retard mode sets 3, 4 and Texas got back in it. She must have played like that the whole match against SFA for Rice to lose. I’ve never seen anyone that inconsistent, but when she was on she was incredible.

Back row defense was really bad too, especially the OH’s, even Micaya. Like the post above says, that was Logan’s worst match ever. I know Jarrett has been saying now he has a 6 rotation team, but only the defensive specialists are good on the back row. Rice exposed it and others will too if our MB’s can’t do better. Maybe Bri can get back on the court and do better, but Molly finally had her “I’m a Freshman” match. Complete failure to read the opposites and to slow to get into position.

But really, the body language of our young players told the whole story. You could see it their faces and demeanor, scared and playing not to lose rather than playing to win. That’s when you hit balls going out, run in front of a person in position to make the bump, watch balls fall to the ground, etc. Micaya is the only one that played with confidence. The Rice crowd acted like they had won the national championship on every point and apparently that rattled the young Texas players. The young players and going to have to learn to get pissed off and play with vinegar in their veins. The last point was an epitome of the whole match. A weak attempt on a ball that was headed out. And you can’t have 3 SE’s in a 15 point set and expect to beat a good team.

If our freshman played scared and  were rattled by the freaking Rice crowd Just wait until they play on the road at Baylor, Iowa state, or even OU. Those teams aren’t worse than Rice except maybe OU. Gonna be a long season for us if they don’t pull it together

How did they play so composed at Tree but not Rice?

I know the Tree students weren't on campus yet, but COME ON.  It's Maples Pavilion versus Rice Gym.

I don't know about this year, but I was at Stanford last year. Less than 1/4 full and hardley anyone was even in to the match. It felt more like a women's quilting session. It was night and day different than Fox gym. They did everything but throw bottles at our players last night.
