Bought Ikon passes for the whole family. We are doing a quick trip to steamboat right around New Years which I am hoping it won’t be as crowded as the Summit county resorts. We will also do another trip for spring break. Right now thinking of aspen, winter park, Utah or trying big sky. We are mainly beginners/intermediates. Like my trails like my women, groomed. We will be driving. What does Surly say?

Winter park IMO.  Good intermediate skiing . Aspen is great but bigger terrain, don't know about big sky, but suspect bigger terrain.

The week between Christmas and New Years is the busiest time of year anywhere you're going to go.  Winter Park is a shitshow that week.  So is Summit, Vail, and everywhere else in CO.  Don't know about Utah but I would imagine the same there.  Bring the big wallet if you go to Aspen.

It does have one of those!  Just start knocking on doors in the area.  You'll find me eventually.

I’ve not been to any Colorado resorts, but have been to big sky.

we got a great deal to go a couple of years ago in April. Like $150 a night for a room and 2 lift ticket good. Kids learned to ski at their ski school, which was really good. The resort is enormous and there were zero lift lines, which the staff told us is normal for non holiday weeks. You pretty much ski into your next lift seat. So it would be good for your spring break trip.
I think you’d love it, but that’s a long drive in what could be a thousand miles of inclement weather.

aspen.

no lines and there's 2 mountains that are your speed. pretty much all of buttermilk (the greatest hill on earth for parents with small children) and half of snowmass are beginner/intermediate.

I heard that about big sky and that was really intriguing especially after waiting in a 30 minute lift line at Breckenridge.

We got an amazing deal last year at aspen right before Christmas. We had a three bedroom condo for four nights and four day lift tickets for 8 people for $2100. It was by far the cheapest place I found despite their reputation. The kids loved Buttermilk and everyone was really great there. We parked on the front row every morning. The shuttle was awesome as I went to Snowmass and my brother went to highlands.

You only get 7 days at aspen with the Ikon pass and I’ll use four at a meeting I have there in February.

If it works out it would be my favorite but I’ll have to see. I thought going to summit county and skiing both copper mountain and a-basin might be good. I’ve never done a-basin, but heard it might not be great for the kids.

Sounds like something someone from Carbondale would suggest...

Booked Telluride over spring break for the family.  Staying slopeside at a house in Mountain Village.  We haven't been to Telluride in almost a decade.  Last few trips have been Breckenridge and Vail.  This will be the first time that we're going to drive instead of fly.  Coming that way from Austin area.  Definitely going to break it up into two days of travel both directions.

Any thoughts of the best route?  I'm spitballing here, but I was planning on trying to make it through Big Spring / Roswell to Albuquerque on the way there.  Then, come back through Clovis to Lubbock on the way back.  Trying to front-load the drive to make the second day more manageable in both directions.  Planning on using Marriott points for those hotel stays along the way which is why I'm using Albuquerque and Lubbock as our overnights.  Any other suggestions?

I'm checking out lift tickets for Breckenridge between Christmas and New Years.  It seems that the Epic day pass for a limited number of days is way cheaper than getting Breckenridge only lift tickets.  It's about a $50 per day savings--perhaps more outside of the holiday season.  And the Epic pass is way more flexible than the Breckenridge only pass.  The only catch seems to be that you need to buy the Epic day pass before 11/24.  Who wouldn't buy the Epic day pass?

I've bought one the last several seasons. The son gets his for $99 because he's active military.

It's the best value out there IMO, especially if I can make 2 trips west in season.  With walk up prices being $150 at Breck, its a no brainer.  We're gonna hit Park city in March so it's a double bonus there.

Did this exact itinerary last year from DFW. Stayed in ABQ on the way up, stayed in Lubbock on way back. Lubbock was pushing it a bit, didn't get to hotel until 1 a.m. Amarillo is another option.

Cool video from Montgenevre... hike up to a fort on the Maginot line, ski down great lines, eventually trash the base of your skis and get picked up.  Rinse and repeat?

I did Dallas to dumas and then dumas to ft Collins by hitting i25 in raton, nm. Each was about 6 hours iirc.
Austin to Amarillo I’m guessing would be 9-10 hours?

Austin to Amarillo is about 7-8 with minimal stops and good weather.

Did Thanksgiving in sun valley. God I love that place. Mountain was pretty limited because they had no snow on Tuesday, but then got 2 feet Wednesday into Thursday. So it helped soften up the man made arteries and allow for a little crud on the sides.  Skied Friday and Saturday.

CO getting great snow right now. Trying to work out an early Jan weekend to Vail. Love the back bowls.

Hitting Santa Fe 12/27-1/1. Go here every year at the same time... with the rest of Austin. So looking forward to green chili stew at Totemoffs.

Hitting Park City 2/6-9. Only skied here once and it was during the drought of ‘18. No idea why they had as many runs open as they did. Some of the most technically challenging skiing I’ve ever done. Skiing at the back of Canyons was mostly just trees and rocks. We were doing shit that I normally would not do, dropping off of 10-15 ft cliffs... not because we’re badasses at the age of 40, but because there was certainly no other way down the mountain. It’s funny what you can pull off when you absolutely have to. This is/was my annual dude’s trip. Same 5 guys that all graduated from UT and live in different areas of the country. Can’t wait.

could use some PC non-common-knowledge restaurant recs though.

Heading out to someplace new in the morning. Antelope Butte in the bighorn range ( actually in Shell, WY where Kanye just bought another, larger ranch)

https://www.antelopebuttefoundation.org/

it’s another nonprofit hill where, currently I understand there is none but a yurt there as they renovate the lodge, so byo everything and no reason to stop.

first trip of the year since the place we bought season passes still doesnt have enough snow to not fuck up your skis.

Got some ski trips booked aside from the day trips to winter park out of Denver where I’m based these days. Hitting SLC for four days at Brighton and Snowbird then Mammoth for four days out in California.

also just picked up all new gear...

Patagonia Snowdrifter bib and Triolet jacket

Lib Tech T Rice Orca 153

Union Falcor bindings

DC T Rice Boa boots.

I’ve had the same gear since 2012 so it’s gonna be a nice little stretch. Also got five weeks off work coming up from Jan 3 to Feb 6.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good place to take kids for their 1st trip? Even better if we can drive there from Texas. Looking at places in NM.

Wolf Creek in Southwest Colorado is a good size ski area but still affordable. Its really expensive to do lessons at the larger resorts. We are leaving for Steamboat today with our five kids. Oldest son wants to try snowboarding but I told him we will likely learn at a different trip/mountain where the lessons are more affordable.

If ya do it right you can come home with at least 5 of the kids, and your wife won't walk bow legged for too long.

A lot of variables. Found a great deal at Aspen last year and speness than 3k for four days skiing and four nights in 3bd condo. Got an ikon pass for everyone, so I'm already 3k in the hole just on lift tickets. I've got two trips with the family planned and two without them.

sipapu near taos is super cheap. it's far from the nicest but it's serviceable, and it's a good spot to test the waters for the first time.

Yeah, guess I should have said the wife is used to Vail, Breck , etc... that place isn’t going to fly.

Let me rephrase, any insight on Angel Fire, Red river, Taos, any other NM Resorts we should look at?
