Cancel and go to Disneyland.  Much better weather.

Don’t go to Universal Studios. We went there one summer and it was absolutely crawling with unsupervised school-aged children with a summer pass who are dropped off or bussed in by their parents for the day (it’s way cheaper than summer camps, etc.). They aren’t clogging up the lines per se, but they’re fucking everywhere, and you can hardly find a place to sit and rest. Holy shit that was stressful.

They just added the Millenium Falcon ride as a Maxpass option which is very nice. Though the Rise of the Resistance is still ridiculous. Something like the boarding group passes go up at 8am and are gone in 60 seconds. Then you have to hope you didn't get the backup boarding party that probably has no chance of getting on if the ride goes down at any point of the day. I'm hoping by June, it's more ironed out. We're going for 3 days so I figure we'll get a chance to get on it at least once.

Just did “Rise of the Resistance” at Disneyland yesterday.  Yes, it took planning.   Yes, it took persistence.  But it was 100% worth it.   Completely unlike any other theme park ride I’ve ever been on.

Ride has four stages.   First is in a “ready room” with an animatronic BB-8 and a Rey hologram.  Second is on a “shuttle” with animatronic pilot and simulated flight with front and rear view.  Third phase is aboard a First Order Star Destroyer for “prisoner processing” that has animatronic Storm Troopers, live actors as a First Order officers, and a full scale tie fighter.   Fourth phase involves an “escape” in an autonomous vehicle that progresses through multiple scenes with animatronics with incredible video and physical effects.  It is truly impressive.

The ride is still buggy with multiple down periods per day.  It took us three attempts to get through the ride.   Twice the ride malfunctioned after we started and we were removed from the ride, but given fast passes to jump the line when the ride re-started after an hour or so.

You must be inside the main gates of the park to join the virtual queue and get assigned to a boarding group through the Disneyland app.   We timed everything well and were inside the park on Main Street more than a half hour before the park opened fully.  The virtual queue process goes live as soon as the park opens at 8 or 9 am depending on the opening time for the day.   Your group must all have their tickets linked in the app.  Everyone in the group can link everyone’s tickets to their own phones, so you can have multiple people trying for the boarding group assignment as soon as it goes live.

As soon as the clock hits opening time, start hitting the “request boarding group” button in the app.  The system is smart enough that once someone in your group gets into a boarding group, it will block the rest of your group from getting another one, but that’s good.  Only one person needs to get it for the whole group.   We had four people from our group of six trying to get a boarding group.  We got one less than 10 seconds after it went live and we were already boarding group 59 for the day.  If your number is above 72, they say not expect to get on the ride.  Our group was called to get in line right around 4 pm.

Great information. What time did you get there to get inside the gates and what time did they let you in.@mdleast is going on Spring Break and would like this information since they're only doing one day.

They usually open the main gates to let you on to Main Street about 45 minutes prior to the park opening.  We were in line at the main gates about 7:15 for an 8 am park open time.   Even though the line looked huge, we were inside the park by 7:25.

Just check the opening time for the day that you are going.  That’s the only variable each day.  Get to the main gates 45 minutes prior to opening time and you should be golden.

This is the guide I used and it worked: https://www.disneytouristblog.com/star-wars-rise-resistance-disneyland-strategy-guide/

I highly recommend researching this all again in the week or so leading up to your visit to see if anything has changed.  As far as I know, the virtual queue process has been pretty much the same since the ride opened last month, but don’t take for granted that it won’t change.

That was what killed AstroWorld. Middle class families that spent money stopped going.

I believe Universal wised up and annual passes now have much of the summer blocked out until you buy a $700 pass.

On extra magic hour when the park opens at 7 be there at 6:15? Yikes, at least we should feel like we are on central time the first day or two.

No, extra magic hours are only for people staying onsite at the Disneyland hotels. Unless you strive to be the first person on a ride that day, you can get there around 6:45 and be fine. They have a separate entrance for Extra Magic Hours and Magic Mornings (3 day ticket holders). Unless you're talking about World, which a vast majority are onsite people. Then yeah, get there early.

RoR is not included in magic hour.  The virtual queue does not go live until the main park opening.

The one advantage that magic hour gives you is that you are definitely inside the main gates when the virtual queue goes live without having to wait in the massive lines at the main gate or hang with the masses on Main Street until opening.
