Fire Shaka Smart

I don’t think it’s that crazy of an idea. Take BWG’s example and make it even more extreme. If Wake pays Shaka $1 mil per year, then we save $4 mil (cheaper than firing Shaka next year) and Wake gets a coach they could sell to their fan base for dirt cheap with no buyout so they can afford to pay the buyout for their current coach.

If we base our firing decision on saving 1 mil per year, we deserve a bb team even shittier than the one we have right now.

Y’all were asking why Wake would want to do it, not about CDC’s decision making process.

Maybe CDC is getting rid of him no matter what. Maybe CDC needs the number to be at least $1.5 million or 2 million per year. Impossible to know right now.

So who besides Lunardi actually has Texas in the tournament? I read an article in The Athletic this morning counting Texas as safely out. I assume a loss to KU, a .500 record and 16 losses would have to have us out, but I know this is the softest bubble in years.

Lunardi said on Saturday that he wouldn’t put a .500 Texas team in the tournament.

Is Roach going to play against Kansas? As much as it pains me to say it, I can actually see him coming back and we surprise Kansas in the opening round.

Hard pass on Musselman. He’s probably the worst option out of all the names I’ve seen mentioned, except for maybe Prohm.

He has a history of developing talent and he runs an uptempo, high scoring offense. hard pass on passing on him if he wants the job.

I would too but this is a culmination of a bunch of 4th and 5th year players. His defenses have historically been pretty terrible. The two years prior, he wasn’t even in the top 100 in adjusted D.

I'm on the record as saying that if Musselman takes a promotion at the college ranks that he will need to get himself a "defensive coordinator" a la Beilein, and if he does in fact do that i don't see any way he isn't successful at a bigger school with his offensive mind and ability to teach/coach up talent.

Wow.  So if we don't find somewhere for him to land, then next year it's "Hi, honey.   I couldn't get a better situation together so I want you back, but just for one year."  THAT will certainly work out well for everyone...

I laugh at the idea of finding him a school that wants him and us moving on. Why would Wake or anyone else want what we dont? It would take some delusion for Wake or anyone else to think Shaka would do better at their school than he has at Texas.

Ya that would never happen, and certainly wouldn’t work out for that team! Hint. Tennessee.

It’s completely fucking ridiculous for many reasons. I’m sure “Texas didn’t fire their coach because they couldn’t afford to” will be a great look for the program and for recruiting.

VT is Virginia Aggy ... except the scenery is much better around Blacksburg.

I've enjoyed numerous trips to Virginia Tech for Pitt v Tech football. I wouldn't put the people I have met there in an Aggie category. But perhaps your experiences differ greatly from mine.

I member when we played them in the Sugar Bowl. When asked 'What's a Hokie?' All I could come up with was, 'Is it your version of "Dueling Banjos"?' I would put them in the Deliverance aggy category.

This. The coaching talent in the big 12, while very good, does not explain his teams' perpetual lack of identity and maddening inconsistency from game to game.

It's pretty much identical to the Charlie situation.  His peers were good coaches and also he was terrible. See: the same exact problems surfacing in Tampa.

Bet Shaka's issues will follow him to his next stop, when he's coaching at Not Wake Forest.

Exactly. Shaka was overrated when we hired him, and he's been exposed.

PittsburghTiger

I saw the VCU teams play in person a few times and when they were "on" it was fun as hell to watch. Not much time for getting up and going to the concession stand.

Not many of those comments aged well. Thankfully mine was not too embarrassing.

I think Musselman has the best chance of immediate success at Texas simply because he's already had success with the transfer/grad transfer market. Not sure he would be the best overall hire but the best chance at early success.

That Nevada team is pretty much all transfers/grad transfers.

I guess you could also make this argument for Beard though as he went JUCO/grad transfer heavy this year.

This doesn't sound like a recipe for success.  But, I also don't like the "staying together for the kids" sound of Shaka not being able to find a great landing spot either.

I am no basketball expert, but I will watch every game if we have a competitive team that is fun to watch.  I gave up on Shaka after Okie State last year, and gave up on this team after VCU.  Certainly there is somebody, anybody, better than Shaka.

i am absolutely certain that somewhere faaar back in this thread, the horse has been beaten dead so i apologize in advance but can someone fill me in on the prospect of stealing beard from tech?  is it possible/realistic from a contractual standpoint?  would he be interested?

I don't know about the "interest" part but here's the contract terms:

Quote

If Beard leaves for a Big 12 school before April 2021, the buyout is 40 percent of the remaining base salary and rights fees on the contract.

If he leaves for another (non-Big 12) school or the NBA before April 2021, the buyout is 20 percent of the remaining base salary and rights fees left on the contract.

If he leaves after April 2021, the those buyout numbers drop to 20 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

Beard's contract (base salary and rights fees) is thus:

2018-19 - $2.8 million
2019-20 - $2.9 million
2020-21 - $3 mil
2021-22 - $3.1 mil
2022-23 - $3.2 mil
2023-24 - $3.3 mil

So Beard's buyout if he came to Texas after April of this year would be $6.2 million.

He's been an extremely successful coach pretty much everywhere he's been, he's just never been known as a defensive guy. Rick Barnes needed help with his offenses all of the time as he didn't have an offensive system but rather was always building around his personnel. And as I just mentioned John Beilein, one of the better coaches around, realized that he needed to upgrade defensively and went out and got himself a defensive specialist, and his last two Michigan teams are arguably the two best teams he's ever had in his coaching career. Musselman would succeed here, but how much so would depend on his defensive coaching hires.

the money is so substantial that I don't see any chance of it happening.

So you're looking at about 18 million in buyout fees plus giving beard a raise over what he makes at Tech. All of this for a guy with two tourney appearances 4 years as a div 1 head coach. That's a pretty big gamble.

That's more than we paid to secure our current football coach, who was even more of a gamble.
