For context and to shed a bit of light on why I made the prediction: prior to the season, I heard from some close to the Jones family that they were expecting him to play significant minutes. There was an offhand mention of the coaches broaching the topic of him redshirting, but I only heard it mentioned once so I dismissed it as unlikely. That's where I made my error; if I had taken the redshirting talk more seriously then I would have adjusted my expectations.

As for banking on freshman, this year will be the first since his first season where Texas won't be reliant on any freshmen for baseline competence. There's a decent chance there are zero freshmen in the starting lineup for portions of this season depending on how Baker/Jones integrate into things; a starting lineup of Coleman - Ramey - Jones/Febres - Hepa - Sims is pretty likely unless Liddell or Baker show out in the offseason.

fair enough. If you are Mack Brown that starting lineup scares you to death.  Febres and Hepa need to improve immensely.  Sims and Coleman are who we thought they were.  I'm guessing Ramey is going to be targeted by the opponents best defender consistently.

yeah i don't want Yaklich as our next HC no matter what he does under Shaka. That said I still expect us to have one hell of a defense with Yaklich here, particularly if he outlasts Shaka. Still, he's not ready for this job. Not even close. I just hope that a year from now Shaka is gone and Yaklich is still here in his current role.

Tech fans could have said the same thing about Chris Beard when he was an assistant under Bobby Knight.... that seems foolish now.  Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley's first Head Coaching jobs were at blOU.

You might be out over your skis GP...

Saying you don't want Yaklich as the Horns next Head Coach "no matter what" when you haven't seen even one year of his coaching at Texas??

If Shaka is out next year, Yaklich is interviewed among a host of qualified candidates and determined to be the best choice, I will be fine with CDC's decision.

I think the idea that CDC foisted Yaklich on Shaka with designs on having a coach-in-waiting is fantasy.

Agree that Yaklich was not hired as the coach-in-waiting.  But if he turns out to be a great coach and recruiter, he should be considered...

A buddy who is well connected at Michigan and a huge basketball fan, feels Yaklich is a smart, great coach and compares him to Chris Beard.  He wanted Yaklich hired as Michigan's Head Coach instead of Juwan Howard.

chris beard and luke yaklich are not comparable here.

beard had three years as an assistant at UNT, then several head coaching jobs at smaller schools, then spent a decade as associate HC at Tech, was a HC in the ABA, then was hired as a HC by a D-1 school (UALR) where he went 30-5, was named the Sun Belt COTY, and even beat Purdue in a 12/5 tournament game. He was then hired by *Texas Tech*, which at the time was, i dunno, like the 70th best job in cbb or so? and that was because he had already spent 10 years there and they're the kind of program that makes that kind of hire.

luke yaklich otoh was a high school coach and history teacher for 14 years, then spent 4 years as an assistant at Illinois State, and now two years as an assistant at Michigan. and this Texas, one of the best gigs/biggest athletic departments in the country. no way we go for that.

Great info.... On paper you are right!!

guess I'm just hoping Yaklich is even better than expected.  Lord knows this Texas Basketball program could use some great coaching....

Was Will Wade the secret behind Shaka's success at VCU. I was reading an article about LSU playing Texas and how Will Wade called Shaka boss. So I looked them up and find out that as soon as Will Wade leaves Shaka's teams go down hill at VCU. Will Wade gets to LSU and in year two he is 25-5 and wins the conference.

Maybe this is like Chris Petersen being the secret to Dan Hawkins success because as we know Dan Hawkins ended up being a joke on his own. For some Shaka is already a joke and maybe he rode someone to a nice job just like Mr. Hawkins.

it's definitely possible, which is why pulling in people like Berry and Yaklich (not to mention Hudy and the impact she will have) has been so huge for my feelings about the program going forward. our team this year will not be supremely talented, but if we start bringing in guys like GB III sand KJ Adams with this staff then look out.

I enjoy reading multiple posters and sources even if some of their predictions are wrong.  Yes BWG makes mistakes.  Yes Wes Eberts often says dumb stuff.  Lots of regular posters write some crazy shit.  I make mistakes too.

But I also enjoy getting longhorn nuggets from all these different sources and it helps me enjoy Texas sports even more.  Part of being a fan is learning as much as you care to learn about your teams, having opinions good and bad, and cheering and yelling like hell at the Longhorns. 😀

Thanks to everyone who participates on Surly.  Even the ones who piss me off sometimes!!

this is actually an excerpt from a different post, but it essentially says what i wanted to come here and say, so bam:

man i can't wait for this fucking nightmare to be over with. watching Shaka fight to overcome his brilliant assistants and their actual knowledge and coaching ability is going to be a special kind of hell this year. i can't wait to see the new ways we discover to lose close games, only to have Shaka explain that "we didn't have enough  great tomorrows this week" to beat Oklahoma State and that we need to have better tomorrows next week if we want to beat Baylor.

this was in response to some quotes from Shaka from the other day, when he continued to display that he has absolutely nothing of value or substance to say, and it ain't because he's being cagey or guarded- he's just a clueless buffoon with nothing to say.

but the *real* thing i wanted to expound on is this- we have one of the best staffs in the league when it comes to assistants, and pound for pound probably one of the 15 or so best staffs in the country when you talk about the likes of Berry, Yaklich, Hudy, and even on down to Rob Lazare. this is a pretty loaded staff that should seriously be able to prop up Shaka, and hopefully overcome his lack of knowledge/acumen/coaching ability. i'm very interested in seeing how his year plays out, because the guy has been given everything he could ever ask for in terms of support. what sucks though is the thought of having to lose all of these badass assistants when we can Shaka and our new hire has his own assistants to bring in. can they all do enough to save Shaka's job (and in turn their own)? we shall see.

Shaka Smart, Texas

Texas fired Rick Barnes in 2015 after he made the NCAA Tournament 16 times in a 17-year span. So Shaka Smart missing the Big Dance in two of the past three seasons is obviously problematic -- even if it's only fair to note that he literally lost his leading scorer midseason in two of those three seasons, which would be tough for any coach to overcome in a league as annually strong as the Big 12. To be clear, that's not an excuse for Smart's uneven first four years at UT as much as it's a possible explanation for Smart's uneven first four years at UT. It's why I think some of the criticism is misguided and inappropriate, and why I personally remain a believer in Smart. But, either way, the pressure is mounting for him to breakthrough with a big season. Anything short of that might lead to an uncomfortable March.

Idiot.

He lost me when we lost to Radford.  NOt because I have any deep knowledge of hoops x's and o's, but as a donor and season ticket holder to Longhorns basketball...I live by one rule, "You can schedule a team I've literally never heard of (and I work significantly in higher education), but you cannot lose to a team I've never heard of."  And he did that, in addition to so many other spectacular fails.

Having said that, I fully expect that we lose to California Baptist University this season.  Mainly because I used to live in California and I've never heard of this school.  And it's just some tiny cult college campus in the Sierra foothills.  This is apparently a big enough school to field a Div. I hoops team with 7,000 students in Riverside, CA which is a mid-sized American city.  So I bet dollars to donuts we lose to them.  I like the guy, but this bullshit experiment with his coaching style has gotta stop soon.

Dude, can you really argue with a bio like that? I mean, sure, it's not like hosting the highest rated afternoon drive radio show in Albuquerque, but you can't have everything in life, right?

I don't think Americans realize that Memphis is now larger than BOTH Oklahoma City and Louisville.    So we're talking serious business...

Memphis, TN Population: 652,236 (2017)
Oklahoma City, OK Population: 649,021 (2018)
Louisville, KY Population: 770,557 (2018)

Hmmm... Not bad, but still...

Albuquerque, NM Population: 1,171,991 (2016)

Let me know what Scott Stiegler thinks of Shaka Smart, and we'll be on to something.

There is no way in the world the City of Albuquerque has 1.2 million people within its borders.  Are you getting your market data from Gustavo Fring?  That city does not have that many people.  It's doesn't have half that many people.  If it did, we would have moved way more of Heisenberg's product.

Everyone just assumed that whoever we hired next *had* to be better than Barnes, and would *surely* take Texas to the next level, not realizing that Barnes is a very good coach (not elite, but very good), and that no elite coaches were interested or even really available for the job when we fired him.

Now Shaka has come in and recruited every bit as well as Barnes did, only his total lack of credentials/preparedness/coaching acumen are on full display now, preventing those recruits from producing at Texas or helping us even be competitive in the Big XII. Hopefully our epic failings post-Brown and Barnes will open some people's eyes as to how well those coaches actually did during their time at Texas.

1.2 million is about right for the ABQ-Santa Fe-Las Vegas region. ABQ metro is about 900k, but ABQ proper is about 560k.

so the population of Albuquerque doesn't technically include the citizens of Las Vegas?  Wow.  I learned something new on this thread besides the fact that Shaka has been a tremendous disappointment in terms of on-the-court success.  More lottery picks in four years than he has NCAA tournament appearances.  That blows my fucking mind.  Not victories in the NCAA tourney, but just appearances.  And not total draft picks, just lottery picks.

Cry 'Havoc', and let slip the dogs of buyout.....

No, it's over 100 miles from ABQ.

Some buddies and I were extremely disappinted one night to discover that the "Las Vegas" 75 miles from Santa Fe was, in fact, not the one with the casinos.

What're you talking about, we get to host both UAB and High Point University?  Woz's alma mater!

LSU should be a good game.  The home conf. games with Kansas, Tech, Baylor, et. al. are gonna be bloodbaths.

No doubt.  I guess the new coach speculation will begin again shortly after conference play starts.  There were some good ones hired last season while we watched.  Hopefully we can find a seasoned coach wanting to exit the NBA with quality coaching results in CBB.

i'm just old enough to hate Arkansas. my earliest memories are of me hating the pigs, as I was born during the Sutton era and grew up during Strollin Nolan's time at arkie. it is going to seriously suck if Musselman (probably no.4 or 5 on my realistic hire list from last year) and Buzz (near/at the top of my list) go to arkie and a&m and have success while we continue to languish under Shaka. Damn it is annoying that those coaches went to those schools.

It will depend on our second and third conference games. Obviously at this point, a 7-5 non-conference start isn't bad enough to get anyone's attention, so when we do that, you'll just get more sniffing from people like Gary Parrish about how Texas fans are being a little bit unfair to Promising Young Coach Shaka Smart, who took one team to a Final Four nine fucking years ago and hasn't been to the Sweet 16 since.

We open in Waco (L) and then we come home for two winnable games (KSU, OU). If we somehow lose both of those home games, the heads have officially fallen off the pets.

There are only three games out of conference that could even potentially be considered "not embarrassing" if they end up in the 'L' column. A 7-5 start would definitely get a lot of people's attention.
